Sonya Smith was the first to complete the Aerial Dance Track of the Masters of Fine Arts in Dance from the University of Colorado Boulder. A scientific artist, Smith has accumulated somatic information from Alexander Technique, Kinesiology, and athletic training as well as a certificates in Pilates and as a GYROKINESIS® Apprentice Trainer. She trained with Madeline Black and Jean Sullivan and has been teaching Pilates since 2002 with an emphasis on biomechanical accuracy and creative imagery. As a performing artist, Smith spent a decade studying and dancing in the Bay Area with Joanna Haigood/Zaccho Dance Theatre, Project Bandaloop, Dance Brigade, Lizz Roman and Dancers, and Sara Shelton Mann before returning to academia where she continued to earn residencies, teach, and produce work around the country. She has recently returned to the Bay Area, her creative and somatic home.
